About This Tour
David Gareja is one of those places that defies expectation. When most people think of Georgia, they picture green mountains, dramatic valleys, and alpine meadows. But out here, 70 kilometers southeast of Tbilisi, the landscape transforms into something completely different — a semi-desert plateau that stretches toward the horizon, dotted with ancient cave monasteries carved directly into the rock. It's stark, beautiful, and utterly unique. This is where some of Georgia's earliest monks came to live in solitude, and the spiritual energy of the place is still palpable today.
The monastery complex was founded in the 6th century by David Gareja, one of the thirteen Assyrian Fathers who brought Christianity to Georgia. The main complex, Lavra, sits at the base of the cliffs and includes churches, refectories, and living quarters carved into the soft sandstone. But the real magic happens when you hike up to Udabno monastery, perched on the ridge overlooking Azerbaijan. The trail is moderate — about 30-40 minutes each way — and the reward is extraordinary. Inside the caves, you'll find stunning medieval frescoes that have survived centuries of sun, wind, and history. And the views from the top are simply breathtaking.
What I love most about David Gareja is how different it feels from the rest of Georgia. The silence, the vastness, the sense of stepping back in time — it's an experience that stays with you long after you leave. Whether you're interested in history, spirituality, or just the raw beauty of an otherworldly landscape, this is a day trip you won't forget. We'll take our time exploring both Lavra and Udabno, and I'll share the stories that make this place so special.
